The Simple Science of Stretch Film

Many factors must be considered when shipping a product, but essentially it boils down to this: find the least amount of packaging materials to provide the most protection possible for the least amount of cost. While this seems just like a math problem, it takes science to come up with the right solution.

Introducing Tarheel Paper Company’s newest elements in packaging: Titanium, Zirconium, & Cobalt Stretch Films.

If you’re trying to reduce your costs per load on machine stretch film, the Titanium and Zirconium films are both terrific options. The Titanium Film is an 80ga EQ, while the Zirconium Film is a 70ga EQ.  Both are high performance single sided cling films that exhibit the same brute strength as the standard 80 gauge & 70 gauge films, but require less film per load, which then provides a lower cost per load that you’re looking for.

Urethane foam (Foam in Place) has dispensing hazards due to the high temps, messy and toxic chemicals. It is labor intensive and harmful to the operator. Spills Happen. Stay Prepared.

It’s time to get down and dirty and discuss one of the biggest safety issues out there: spills. Can you remember the last time you spilled something? I can. It was Friday. I spilled a full cup of water while working on a flyer for spill containment products.

Spills happen. That’s a fact. Here’s another fact: Every 8 seconds someone goes to the emergency room because of a fall.

According to the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, in 2009 44,920 slips/trips were reported, and 186,630 falls (to the same level) were reported. Those are just the workplace numbers. In all, 21,000 people on average will die each year due to an injury caused by a fall. The estimated annual cost of all this? A staggering $60-80 billion dollars.

$60-80 billion spent each year just because of people slipping and falling. Let’s not forget about more catastrophic spills, like oil spills. As of April 2011, the US Government Accountability Office stated that “The total cost to clean up the massive and unprecedented oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico following the Deepwater Horizon explosion (including costs to help pay for the spill’s adverse impact on businesses and individuals in the region) are yet unknown, but have been estimated in the tens of billions of dollars.” The Exxon Valdez accident in 1989 cost over $7 billion dollars.

Be Sure-Footed About Safety

Safety first is my motto and I start thinking about it as soon as my feet hit the floor each day. I’m not saying everyone should obsess about safety the way I do, but at the very least, you should be thinking about it as soon as you enter your workplace each day. Providing a safe work environment not only keeps your business running smoothly, but helps keep insurance costs low. One of the first ways to improve safety throughout the building is providing proper matting.
